“Oh! Oh-oh! C’mon! Come on! Come on! Come on! HOT!! What a hot beat!
WHOOOOAH! YEEEEAH! YAHOOO!!
Heeey!! What a nice tune! Just like that, my depression is all gone!
Something just came over me! I suddenly wanted to dance like crazy!”
So when I listen to Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness’s Walking In My Sleep, this is the scene and quote that comes immediately into mind. Every part of it, actually.
I think of, and empathize, with the pure joy and happiness Darunia felt the first time he heard Link play The Lost Woods.
You don’t remember anything before that. You don’t remember that you’ve had a poor harvest of Bomb Flowers. And you don’t remember that your tears were streaming with another anxiety attack just a half hour before.
In that moment, all that matters is sing and dance.
But it’s so hard. It’s so hard when your mind is so far into the dark that you feel it’s only RIGHT of yourself to feel that way, and stay in that state. That’s all that feels right. Nothing is rational. The mind begs to stay that way. The mind begs the body to stay down, to stay sad, and to stay in the dark. And all the weight of the entire world is on your chest and shoulders.
That’s why it’s so hard to stand. That’s why it’s so hard to move. That’s why it’s so hard to play a song.
But tonight, I worked up the courage to fight the dark and play this song.
And I sang. And I danced. And just like that…
In that moment…
…
I was Darunia.
