As I’ve said many times before, I’ve never been a fan of the term “coming out.” One shouldn’t feel like they need to “come out” to be themselves in our society.
That being said, I’ve been “out” to everyone for a while now, and out to my father since I knew I was gay.
That being said, about a month ago, I went down to see him. I hadn’t seen him in a while, so I figured I would pay him a visit. It’s not like I was hiding anything; if the topic ever came up, I would tell him, but the topic just never came up.
Well I was gonna make sure the topic came up that night.
I had nothing to lose, because things were never good with either of my parents. My grandpa and grandma did more for me than either of them ever could, so if he didn’t like what I had to tell him, then I didn’t care anyway. And I knew things wouldn’t go smoothly, because he was always interested if I had a girlfriend yet, and if I thought this girl was hot, or whatever.
He asked how I’ve been. I told him terrible. And then I told him why, along with everything, and I mean everything, that’s been burdening my mind recently.
“So you love him, and he doesn’t love you back, is that it?” (That wasn’t it, but that’s not the point.)
The point was, he wasn’t surprised, he didn’t care that I was throwing this all on him, all he wanted to do was help. And I asked him how long he’s known. And he said he’s known officially for a few months, and he thought he’d be shocked at first, but “you know what, you’re my son, and I love you either way.”
Officially, he said.
Officially.
They’re your parents, guys. They’ve known you since you we’re born. They know who you are. Whether they will accept you or not is a different story.
And this Christian guy, someone who I thought would be so close minded with it, is perfectly fine with me.

“It’s easy, you just gotta be yourself.”

And when you finally realize that, and accomplish that, you will be much, much happier. Trust me. I’ve been there.

Stay strong, stay brave.
