Butler Bob, as he calls himself. Comes into Pizza Hut all the time. It’s known by pretty much all of us that takes his order that he doesn’t have a phone or address, but such a sweet old guy. That’s all I knew about him, but I’m glad he came in during a time I had zero tables and had time to talk to him this time.
He started a conversation by telling me how he does the flea market every Saturday and Sunday, and how he likes to people watch. And he saw this kid there “with the shaved sides of his head and hair sticking up in the middle all multicolored, tattoos all over, you name it, I don’t know how he gets a job, I’d never hire him” and I was thinking, well this is stereotypical. But I showed him mine on my wrists. I was like, “well what about these?” “Aw well that’s good, drug free, that’s a good thing, I wouldn’t care, I always told my kids, I don’t care what you do, if you get a speeding ticket, I’ll back you up, if you need a place to stay, I’ll back you up, if I catch you with drugs, you get no support.”
He made an example of his one son. “Great kid he is, I support him, beautiful boy, he’s gay, but that doesn’t bother me. If he was gay and did drugs, then we’d have a problem.”
“Well what do you think about gay marriage then?”
“Well they shouldn’t be punished, they were born that way, people think it’s a choice, but it’s genetics, it’s in your mind. They should get the same benefits me and my wife get.”
What hope to have from the older generation, someone I believed to be against us all.
He then told me about how he met his wife. “It was my senior year of college, I saw this blonde. I walked up to her, and said, within 60 days, I will be married to you.”
She was confused, but he was married to her within 60 days. For 40 years. Never remarried after she died 20 years ago, because he said he found her and found the one and there would never be another girl for him.
I told him about my morals and what I believed too. He said to never get down on myself for wanting to save myself till marriage, because he did, and it was the greatest 40 years of his life with her.
This man. Someone that believes in Love. Someone that believes in waiting for the right person. Someone that believes in equality. Too many emotions for one conversation. What an inspiring man…
Butler Bob.
