Here’s a little known fact, We Are Pilots was my coming out album. Well, the first time I came out, in tenth grade. STG’s songs helped me through so much of the hell I was facing through that year of high school. The song of the album, We Are Pilots, is about a girl coming out to her parents, and they don’t accept her. “Hello Mother, some news for you, I’m really not that crazy. Hello Father, I’m curious, why you think there’s something wrong with me?” It really put me in a good mood, knowing that, while this song was probably fiction, or maybe even if it had a little bit of truth somewhere in it, I was not the only one facing these problems. Suicides every day for this very reason, and it’s just sad…
But this isn’t the point of this post. The point of it is, there’s a new song I can relate to off the album that I never could before. I always listened to it, very catchy song, Turn to Real Life, but that’s all it was, catchy. Now it is my life. Because I don’t feel like anything is real anymore after having met the perfect person. Like I feel it’s all a dream, and I’ll one day wake up and none of it will have happened.
The singer is a girl; and she is talking about a “girl in a fantasy” turning to real life. Another song off this album with the context of homosexual love. Which I think is just really cute.
But anyway, this song to me is about a boy in a fantasy, turning to real life. Because he assures me that this is real and this is now, and that it is real life. And I gave him my heart and my full trust, so I will slowly but surely believe that.
I love the last verse. “Under the moonlight, right beside me, makes me feel like a girl in a fantasy turned to real life.” Because that’s something we both have in common, stargazing, just laying there for hours under the moon, not caring about anything else…
But my favorite line, is “I’m a believer for the first time, I can be beautiful…” because. Well. I’m not the most confident person on earth. I’m…Probably one of the least confident people on earth. But knowing that somebody sees me as something more than just your average person…well. That almost makes me feel just good enough.
Almost.
Turn to Real Life.
